Studio Visits #1, Selina Francis Photography, Smyrna, Delaware

This is the first of a new series of posts about local artists and their studios. I’m not sure where this is going, or what it will look like in the end, but, that never stopped me from starting before! I’m hoping to visit studios of artists in many mediums (painters, potters, jewelry makers, wood workers, musicians…) to see where the magic happens, and share that with the world.

Selina spends about 90% of her photography time right here, with a special set up ready to go.

I’ve known Selina for a few years as she’s very active in the photographer community. She’s a skilled maternity and newborn photographer and has taught those subject areas for other photographers at regional conventions and such. Talking with her, I found out she was always the one that had a new camera at all the family gatherings. She was an advanced hobbyist when she did some simple photos of her best friend’s newborn. Some other people asked her to do photos of their kids and she obliged using a simple digital point and shoot. After doing 4 or 5 babies with that primitive camera, she got a DSLR and started honing her craft. About 5 years ago, she opened her first studio and has been photographing pregnant moms and their babies ever since! Selina loves photographing newborns and helping their new mommies have a nice experience in a welcoming high end environment, and get great photos of the newborns at affordable prices. After all this time, doing several sessions a day, Selina knows what works and what doesn’t. Her photos show that!
Because her photography is for clients, Selina doesn’t do any “shows” or enter the photos in contests. She doesn’t sell other than to family members of the subjects either. Check out her webpage here.

Thanks Selina for inviting me in and being my first victim volunteer!

I’m looking for other artists that want to share their space and story too. Contact me if you want to get involved!
