I want to go to the next level this year. Part of that means entering some photo competitions, especially for my Holga Stuff.
I got an email today from Holga Jen of the Holga Darkroom reminding me that The Rayko Photo Center in San Francisco is doing it’s 4th Annual International Juried Plastic Camera Show with a looming deadline for entry. Som I’ve decided to enter the photos below. Competition to get into these things is usually pretty intense! The last one I entered had like 400 entries to get 40 spots. None of mine made the cut for that. Anyways, without further ado, here are my entries. Consider this kind of my 2010 Best Of Film Selection!
I had some problems with this photo, so I fixed them by arting up the photo. I like the impressionist feel for it.
This lady was taking photos of her friends on her cell phone. It made me think that she had been doing this for probably all her life. I think she probably has prints of that photo she took on her fridge at home. When I took this, I was down at the beach for a funeral. I wondered if her photo would be one of the last ones taken of her good friends. After I took the photo here, I used her camera to do a photo of all 4 of them together.
I did a shot of the swamp, apparently didn't bother to advance the film and a short time later did the water tower photo in the sleepy little town of Drew Mississippi on a road trip with my buddy Lowry. I also did a number of bad things to the negative when I developed it myself at home. I didn't care. I love the textures and shapes.
This was an intentional double exposure in my Holga Camera using regular 35mm film.
competitions are exciting! You have to look at past winners to see what the judges are looking for. Also go overboard in professionalism when submitting and presenting. Make your stuff ready for publication and make the judges job easy. They want to get mileage out of submissions and they keep that in mind. They want to be represented in a professional way from winners.
