Here are some of the Holga photos I did at Gettysburg Battlefield New Years Eve day. I developed these myself too.
The statue is life sized and seated on a bench. Tons of folks come up and sit with him for photos.
I loved the light on the canon while I was there. I like to make my Holga images so they are ambiguous for when they were done. Was it a few weeks ago, or back in the 30s? Using Kodak Tri-x film adds to the ambiguity since it's been around so long.
Apparently there were companies that had catalogs of available statues to combine with available bases to be used as markers on all the battlefields of the war in the 1880s and 90s
A hundred yards or so to the left of this is "the Angle" where Picketts men surged to and were forced back from. Far back in the distance is the point the Rebels came onto the battlefied in full view of Union defenders Note there is a modern digital version of this in the post below this. Which version do you like better?
I got to go up to the Gettysburg area to hang out with a couple of my photo buddies/clients and do some shooting too New Years Eve eve and then New Years Eve day. Had to head home earlier than I wanted to have an awesome Crown Roast of Pork dinner so it was all good.
Gettysburg battle field is an amazing place to grok. It’s strange to be walking around taking photos in places where men fought pitched battles and died so long ago. I was up there one time and felt this electric wave of emotion pass through me. It was pretty intense. The scientist in me says bullcrap, but the chick I’m apparently turning into disagrees.
The battle field has over 1200 unit markers and monuments This is kind of typical of the monuments you see all over many Civil War battle fields. In the 1880s and 1890s many Veterans groups put these markers up showing where individual units were on the battlefield at specific dates and times, along with casualties, officers names, acts of heroism and so on. It's fascinating to see them so densely packed
These are stationed at many points on the battlefield. I can only imagine the din that went on here for several days so long ago. I like the statue in the background too of an infantryman using his rifle as a club in the heat of battle.
One of the largest structures on the battlefield. This is quite the memorial. The plaques around the base have the names of all the Pennsylvania soldiers that served at Gettysburg. There are statues of the highest ranking officers and President Lincoln. I'm pretty sure you can climb up some stair ways and overlook the battlefield in there too.
I want to go to the next level this year. Part of that means entering some photo competitions, especially for my Holga Stuff.
I got an email today from Holga Jen of the Holga Darkroom reminding me that The Rayko Photo Center in San Francisco is doing it’s 4th Annual International Juried Plastic Camera Show with a looming deadline for entry. Som I’ve decided to enter the photos below. Competition to get into these things is usually pretty intense! The last one I entered had like 400 entries to get 40 spots. None of mine made the cut for that. Anyways, without further ado, here are my entries. Consider this kind of my 2010 Best Of Film Selection!
The Elder Battery used to house some big guns as part of the forts protecting Philadelphia and the Delaware Bay
I made lemonade with the lemons I had some problems with this photo, so I fixed them by arting up the photo. I like the impressionist feel for it.
It was a rainy day. I love watching people and seeing what happens.
This came out better than I envisioned it when I saw the stalk
I loved the cinematic feel of this photo
I loved the way the sun sparkled on the chrome
Scene on the beach: One of my best photos ever This lady was taking photos of her friends on her cell phone. It made me think that she had been doing this for probably all her life. I think she probably has prints of that photo she took on her fridge at home. When I took this, I was down at the beach for a funeral. I wondered if her photo would be one of the last ones taken of her good friends. After I took the photo here, I used her camera to do a photo of all 4 of them together.
An unintentional double exposure I did a shot of the swamp, apparently didn't bother to advance the film and a short time later did the water tower photo in the sleepy little town of Drew Mississippi on a road trip with my buddy Lowry. I also did a number of bad things to the negative when I developed it myself at home. I didn't care. I love the textures and shapes.
One of my first Diana Camera photos
What the fair is all about, crazy food and rides! This was an intentional double exposure in my Holga Camera using regular 35mm film.
